Plaster wheel is a process used mostly to create prototypes for slip casting molds. It can also be used to create hump and slump molds on the wheel.

1.Creating the first piece which will ultimately become the bottom (inside) mold piece of a solid cast cup, which is cast upside down.

2. Plaster Cup prototype with defined wall thickness. Created by caudling around bottom mold piece, with metal flashing or other waterproof flexible material, pouring plaster and lathing using several sets of calipers to define measurements: Height, diameter of foot ring, diameter of opening, etc.
In this step a template can also be used to define the outer curve.

3. The prototype is then placed back on the first mold piece, caudled again around the defined outer edge of the first mold piece and plaster is poured over prototype defining the outer shape. Top mold piece can also be lathed to decrease weight and help with space efficiency. (More Photos Soon)

“Tapas Micros” was featured in Minneapolis at Piccolo restaurant in conjunction with Chef/Owner Doug Flicker and the Northern Clay Center. The dinner was held on Tuesday, March 27th 2012. Chef Doug Flicker created a 7-course tasting menu based on 7 of the designs from the “Tapas Micros” series.

March 9 – April 29

This group exhibition explores how ceramicists, who work in a high-design aesthetic and often use molds to create their functional objects, engage with today’s industry, the consumer, and the ceramics community at-large. Bridging the roles of artist/designer/ceramicist, these individuals redefine traditional consumer-consumption relationships by offering dinnerware and other functional pottery to enhance the consumption experience, question mass production methods, or experiment with utilitarian design itself. Participating artists include: Nicholas Bivins, Ryan Fletcher, Andrew Gilliatt, Hiroe Hanazono, Jason Miller, and Lenneke Wispelwey.

On Saturday, March 10, there will be an artists’ workshop presentation with selected exhibiting artists. Artist Ryan Fletcher will be in residence at NCC March 8th – 26th. Please stay tuned for special events during his residency.

In September I was invited to the International Ceramics Symposium in Wroclaw (vraht-swaf) Poland. For four weeks I worked in the porcelain factory called Krzystoff creating a body of work using their materials and kilns. I worked and liked alongside twelve other artists:  Jeroen Bechtold (Netherlands), Ray Chen (USA/Taiwan),  Piotr Fladro (Poland),  Michael Flynn (Ireland/Poland),  Alicja Patanowska (Poland),  Monika Patuszynska (Poland),  Danijela Pivasevic-Tenner (Germany/Serbia), Yasuko Sakurai (Japan) Chris Vicini (Sweden/USA), Malgorzata Et Ber Warlikowska (Poland), Anna Malicka Zamorska (Poland/Ukraine).
